hebrews-10-encourage-each-other.jpgAs I sit and contemplate what has been the 4th church visit in as many weeks I begin to pray that God would lead us in our search for a church home here in North Carolina. Side note…it’s great being able to just wear the same outfit each week!!!

So What’s In A Church?

What do you think of when you hear the word “CHURCH”?

What do you look for in a church?

What makes you say: “I love my church”?

We are instructed to meet together as Christians (Hebrews 10:23-25) and as we visit churches we are mindful of just what the purpose of the church is:

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” (Colossians 3:16 ESV)

“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:12-13 ESV)

“The Fellowship of the Believers: And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. And all who believed were together and had all things in common. And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.” (Acts 2:42-47 ESV)

I believe church is:

For us the teaching of sound doctrine is #1. In his first letter to Timothy, Paul instructed him to ensure that only sound doctrine, faithful to God was taught.

“Warning Against False Teachers: “As I urged you when I was going to Macedonia, remain at Ephesus so that you may charge certain persons not to teach any different doctrine, nor to devote themselves to myths and endless genealogies, which promote speculations rather than the stewardship from God that is by faith. The aim of our charge is love that issues from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith. Certain persons, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.” (1 Timothy 1:3-7 ESV)

Paul later wrote to Timothy and reminded him about the dangers of turning away from truthful teaching and instead turning to listen to teachers that suit our own passions…they essentially allow us to accept our sinful heart.

“For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” (2 Timothy 4:3-4 ESV)

So if the teaching is sound, what next…? For us, it is the style of music! We are contemporary music lovers! If we can worship to Hillsong on a Sunday morning – it’s a good day! God puts music in our hearts and I believe we are all instruments that are tuned in wonderful and differing ways.

“He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD.” (Psalm 40:3 ESV)

For us, the people play a huge part in the church also. We need to be around like minded people that we can primarily unite with over our love of Christ, but also share common interests with. That’s just life!

“Divisions in the Church I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.” (1 Corinthians 1:10 ESV)

Is it a place where we can serve? We are all called to serve in some way so as we visit churches we also begin to pray over how we might be able to serve and be involved.

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace” (1 Peter 4:10 ESV)

So…what do you love about your church? Share your heart and pearls of wisdom as I seek to find a new church to call home 🙂
