Just a little thought on a quote I heard today from the movie School of Rock (hey we get our inspiration in random ways!). Joan Cusack’s character, Principle Mullins says:
The Best Defense is a Good Offense
It made me think about our defense against the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In Philippians 1, Paul talks about defending the Gospel, and standing firm in what you believe so that you can stand against those who oppose you. It is unmistakable that we are to defend the Gospel, and “honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you…” 1 Peter 3:15.
So what is our best defense…it is to have a good offense. We are to arm ourselves with the TRUTH – “put on the full armor of God”:
Our best defense is to be able to recognize who we are against. Jesus tells us to: “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves.” Matthew 7:15, and He tells us that we: “will recognize them by their fruits.” 7:16. The “fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” Galatians 5:22-23.
When we are able to recognize the TRUTH of the Gospel, we can then recognize lies. Our best defense against the lies of this world…is to know the TRUTH!
“They are from the world; therefore they speak from the world, and the world listens to them. We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us; whoever is not from God does not listen to us. By this we know the Spirit of truth and the spirit of error.” 1 John 4:5-6
If the “Best Defense is a Good Offense”, then our best way to defend the Gospel of Christ, is to arm ourselves WITH the Gospel of Christ! Know the truth. Live the truth. Through your words and actions – you are representing and defending Christ!
